The butterfly

Scientists estimate that there are almost 20,000 species of butterflies in the world. Butterflies are prized for their beauty, elegance, symbolism in art and literature, as well as importance to the scientific community.

Dempsey received this collection of butterflies from the Prime Minister of Paraguay in 1968. It represents seven of the rarest species found in their country' s rainforest.

Butterflies are important symbols in art and literature in many cultures around the world. Dating as far back as 1500 B.C., they have represented life, rebirth, and metamorphosis. Butterfly wings have also been critical in the fields of architecture and engineering. For example, their wings have inspired airplane wings, as well as helped advance light-emitting diode technology. Their vivid coloration has led to advances in electronics and display technology. In genetics, butterflies have been studied extensively for their polymorphism (differences in appearance), and defensive use of mimicry to disguise themselves as other animals, plants, or even bird droppings.

The Book

The Picture of Dorian Gray," a novel by Oscar Wilde published in 1890, tells a story about a young man named Dorian Gray, who, after sitting for a portrait, wishes that the painting would age instead of himself.

Fantastically, Dorian's wish comes true, and he finds that his sins and hard living are transferred to the painting. Under the direction of a new acquaintance, Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian embarks on a life of depravity while he remains as youthful as the day he sat for the painting. Years later, Dorian realizes the error of his ways, decides to return to a life of virtuosity, and tries to destroy the painting with a knife.

After cries of pain, his servants find Dorian dead... aged beyond recognition and the painting returned to its original youth. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is one of Dempsey's favorite novels. He keeps it on his desk as a warning against hubris. It contains a dedication from an old friend.

This is the text from the inscription that has been retyped by me and the spacing added for clarity -

-----------------------

How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young.

It will never be older than this particular day of June.

If it were only the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old!

For that - for that - I would give everything! Yes there is nothing in the whole world I would not give! I would give my soul for that!

James -- May you find that youth is not the only virtue worth attaining in life.

Eternally yours,

Eleanor

The Obelisk

Obelisks are tall, thin, four-sided, tapering monuments, which generally possess a pyramidal top. Obelisks are generally associated with Egyptian history and architecture, though examples appear in Assyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Ethiopian, and Pre-Columbian civilizations. They are generally agreed to symbolize a refracted ray of the sun as well as a general theme of power and advancement throughout history.

Dempsey has a high-sensitivity microphone embedded in this obelisk to record audio of meetings in his office.

Clicking on a section of the obelisk takes you to some audio recordings.

Carter - A conversation about the agents trying to capture Sean and Leila

Henchman - Conversation about Vicky Roberts not killing VP Jarvis.

VP Jarvis #1 - Conversation about the announcement the president was going to make in the pilot episode, shortly before the plane incident.

VP Jarvis #2 - Conversation about the Presidents meeting with Michael Buchanon.

The Matron - Conversation about the man who was supposed to capture Leila and then Dempsey asks about how Samantha (Assumption as her name is not specifically mentioned) is responding to treatment.

Subject: RE: Dig Progress

Dear Dr. Dempsey,

We recently had a bit of a setback in our dig. The original excavation site ended in solid bedrock. So, we shifted our efforts 10 m, which has yielded an impressive collection of artifacts. I am confident that this will yield the result you desire.

Sincerely,
Harrison Ellis

Dear Dr. Dempsey,

As requested, attached are some photos from the antechamber. It is incredibly dark, so the flash is only able to illuminate a small percentage of the details. But I am confident that you will be quite happy with our find. The limestone has given way to a rather robust layer of sediment and rock, and thus our progress has slowed.
Looking forward to your presence at the site.

Yours sincerely,
Harrison

Update Following Episode 17

From: Carter762x39
To: Dempsey4
Subject: Curious Rendezvous
Mr. Dempsey,

Here is an update on the situation that you wished to monitor:

- Jarvis has made repeated contact with the suspect.
- Several days prior to Martinez's medical condition, Jarvis arranged to meet her in a nearby hotel.
- In the past 24 hours, they spoke twice via cell. Unfortunately, both are using 256-bit encryption, so I'm working with a couple techs to decode.

I will continue to monitor them. Please advise on any action you see fit.

From: Phillip Chandler
To: Dempsey, James
Subject: URGENT: Replacement
Phil,

I would like to personally thank you for all of your diligent and talented work throughout the years on our anti-senescence project.
You are a good friend, scientist, and philosopher. I have come to accept the fact that I can not extend my life forever, and it is time for me to pass the scepter to a new generation. To that end, I believe that I have found a worthy and capable replacement.

In a short time, you will need to make contact with a young man named Sean Walker. My office will make arrangements for that, and in the meantime, will supply you with his detailed medical history, blood tests, and DNA sequence in order for you to begin customizing the telomere treatment to suit him. I understand the unique challenges that you and he will face, so it is imperative that you proceed immediately.

Please give my best to Sally and the kids.

Your friend always,
James

The Fossil

Trilobite

As a perpetual student of history and antiquities, Dempsey appreciates paleontological artifacts such as this trilobite, an extinct marine arthropod that lived between 526 million and 250 million years ago. He personally found this one during a dig in France in the early 1990's.

The Turtle Shell

Turtle Shell

Turtles are a group of reptiles characterized by bony or cartilaginous shells. Some turtle species have been found dating back to 215 million years ago, making turtles older than lizards, snakes and crocodiles. Of the many species alive today, some are highly endangered. Symbolically, turtles inhabit a very special place in human culture.

Dempsey has adopted the turtle as his personal symbol. Its attributes of wisdom, strength, and longevity represent his life's mission.

Safe

On the other views of the office there is only one active item, a safe, but it appears to be empty.

Update 29/03/2011 - The safe now contains a scroll

Update 3 - The scroll now contains the following explanation text -

This ancient scroll tells the story of the millennia's old struggle between the inhabitants of Earth, the invading sleepers, and the Sentinels, a group of people sworn to protect the planet.

Through the course of time, migration, and war, it had been lost. Many years ago, Dempsey vowed to find it and employed expeditions throughout Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East, where it was rumoured to have been buried.

Finally, after painstaking excavation and uncountable dig sites his workers found it. Only time will tell whether its instructions and wisdom will be able to save us once again...

Projector Screen

The projector screen appeared after the events in episode 17, it appears to be a simple slideshow of pictures of Dempsey.

Book Shelf
There are now two clickable books on the book shelf in the same area as the safe.

The first takes you to a slideshow of dig photographs.

The second takes you to a slideshow of sleepers, the pictures all appear to be of Michael Buchannon

Inbox
Another new item appears to be a good old fashioned inbox. No new information here, just some details relating to the Jarvis and the attempt on President Martinez's life we saw in the opening episode.

The second two imags have been resized as the originals are quite small. Click on them to see the full size images.

Dossier

The locked box on the desk is now opened and the contents appear to be the set of photographs from Sean's camera, taken while on the cruise and some documents relating to the death of Gregg, which set Sean on his current path.

Other Items

There are a few other items on the desk, one is a file folder that appears to be locked to us at the moment.

This was unlocked after episode 18, see the Dossier section above.
